Warrior Dash 2011 in North Bend, Washington

You know how I've whined about my poor little broken foot a bit too much lately?  Yes, it even bugged me - so here's a sorry out to all of you!  Well, that whining all stemmed from my major itch to get back to training.  See, I'm competing in the Warrior Dash in North Bend, Washington in July.  

First of all, when you complete the race, you get a FREE BEER!  Now I've got your attention, eh!

Yeah, that got my attention too.  And then I told some friends about it and we were lucky enough to get signed up to compete together.  My big issue at this point is that both of these friends are a lot more athletic than I am.  

Which was why I was training!  When you read on further down, you'll see why I was training in January for an event that takes place in July.

Of course, I made t-shirts.  My friend Kassy has purchased one.  I told her this means she has to come too so her and Steph can cheer us on as we crawl (under barbed wire) toward the finish line.

Here's a few tidbits from the Warrior Dash website:

Obstacles for the North Bend Warrior Dash:

1) Slithering Swamp - Venture into unknown murky waters.

2) Junkyard Jam - Stampede through the scrapyard - including climbing over junked cars.

3) Hay Fever - Hustle up and over giant straw bales.

4) Warrior Wall - Conquer the wooden barricade.

5) Chaotic Crossover - Crawl across the tangled nets.

6) Arachnophobia - Tread through the tangled ropes.

7) Walk the Plank - Traverse the gully on wooden planks.

8) Tunnels of Terror - Burrow through the black tunnels.

9) Cargo Climb - Maneuver over the cargo nets.

10) Warrior Roast - Leap over the Warrior fires.

11) Muddy Mayhem - Scramble beneath the barbed wire as you near the finish!

Awesome, right!!!  Yeah, I thought so too.

RACE LENGTH:  3.55 hellish miles (race length varies depending on location)

There are 6,000 people crazy enough to sign up for this just for Saturday!

Originally it was only on Saturday, then it filled up and they decided to continue it through Sunday...which is almost full.

Not only will we get to compete in something while having a total blast with my friends at the same time but we get to drink free beer, listen to live music, get an awesome fuzzy warrior helmet complete with horns, get a bad-ass warrior dash t-shirt and a medal for finishing, but there will also be awards!!!

AWARDS

The awards ceremony will take place at one hour after the last wave of the day recognizing the day's...

* Top 3 overall male and female participants.

* Top 3 males and females in each age division.

* Most ridiculous costume contest - you should see some of the crazy costumes that have taken place at the four around the world that have happened already.

* Best Warrior beard - yes, even the women are sporting beards!

And, there is only one rule for the costumes: "You're good to go, as long as your costume or running shoes do not harm other participants".  

They will even provide zip ties for you to attach your race chip to your ankle in case you have nowhere else to put it.  Hmm, I believe they are condoning you run stark naked.  I won't be showing up in that costume.  Although, I do suppose you need somewhere to pin your bib number.  Nipple rings, anyone?  Okay, yeah, I really hope I don't see that!

The suggested training schedule is as follows:

Day One: run as far as you can go.  Go home.

Day Two: do the same thing.

Day Three: find the dirtiest pond in your neighborhood and snorkel in it - in your slippers, without goggles.

Day Four: practice your climbing and crawling skills at your local jungle gym.  Ignore small children and parental glares.

Repeat - and do not shower or shave for weeks in order to obtain a true Warrior look.

As they keep saying: IT'S THE CRAZIEST FRICKEN DAY OF YOUR LIFE!

I can't wait!

Resolutions Revisited

And now here we are again a year after I wrote of my resolutions for 2010. What were those resolutions? Well, I won't make you search through my blog all the way back to January of 2010. I will make it easy on you instead and just post them here for you to read.

1. Keep up with my writing
2. Continue exercising to make my final weight goal
3. Get back into art - painting, sketching, photography, etc
4. Be so strong that nothing can disturb my peace of mind

Let's visit them in a linear fashion by addressing number one first, shall we!

I haven't kept up with my writing to the degree I hoped I would, but I did do a little more writing than I did in 2009. First of all, I began journaling again - a private journal that is. Something I did none of in '09. I did not, however post more to my blog in '10 (29 posts) than I did in '09 (30 posts). Maybe this year I will beat that out of the water. We shall see at the end of the year if I've been able to increase my blog writing. I have indeed increased my writing on facebook since this year I opened a facebook page for my Zazzle store.

As for resolution number two, I did exercise in twenty-ten. I did not keep up with it as much as I should have, but I did start running; only to stop two months after starting. Sigh. So, I have started back up with walking again for this year. I did not make it to my weight goal. I still have about fifteen pounds to go but hey, last year at this time, I had twenty pounds to go. Yea me! I lost a whole five pounds in twelve months! Now I'm rolling my eyes at myself. I do have an exercise t-shirt that I wear while exercising that I got from my Zazzle store. I bought the orange one. I think I'd like to get a ringer one next time. This year, I will certainly be doing more exercise. I have signed up to do an event called the Warrior Dash. Now I have to exercise so I don't look like a total fool while I'm competing!

Resolution number three was to do more art. This one I can definitely say I have accomplished. Not only have I begun drawing a lot more, but I've started learning how to use PhotoShop and a couple of other graphic programs as well. And I have been playing my flute, learning to read music again, helping my ten year old son learn to play the piano and even learning some piano myself. You can teach an old dog new tricks! I have been taking more photographs, and even started painting. I will keep pushing to do more art, but now I don't quite feel the same pressure.

My fourth resolution was "Be so strong that nothing can disturb my peace of mind". I did have a bit of a bump this year in my peace of mind but I reached out to my friends, family and community and feel that I have been able to ultimately accomplish this resolution. The love of my life has been such a support to me. Without her by my side, it would have been harder for me to keep my peace of mind.

Something else that contributed to my peace of mind was falling head over heels in love with Steph, buying a camping trailer with her, heading off to the Caribbean where I asked her to marry me and hearing her say "Yes." We have now been together for fifteen months and I have to say it has been the happiest fifteen months of my entire life. I can't wait until the day we get to stand in front of our friends and family on our wedding day.

One thing I did not add to my resolution list was to travel more. I accomplished this one without resolving to do so. I just knew I would. Steph and I had already planned a week long trip through California and Nevada by the time I had written my resolution list last year. By the time we got back, we were planning our next trip which was a week long cruise in the Caribbean in the end of October and beginning of November. Before we went on our cruise, we took a weekend trip to Eastern Washington for a concert where we began talking about buying a trailer together. The next month, we had the trailer and went on a couple of camping trips with it. The month after that, we went on a white water rafting trip and then it was time for our cruise. All of these trips were fabulous and we are now talking about another trip soon. This one will just be a little three day extended weekend but we are both very excited about it as it will encompass our favorite ride the Hollywood Tower of Terror and we still sometimes yell out "Tower, tower, tower!!!" just to remind each other that we can't wait to go back. And I'll have to get this Tower of Terror shirt just to wear on the ride!

See you next year - and we'll see if I've finally got to my goal weight. I better, I'm getting married!

Simple Minds

I think of myself as an intelligent person but there are certainly times when I know I have a simple mind.

For instance, while reading all the little things my friends have "liked" on facebook and laughing so hard tears come to my eyes.

I also like reading things that just make perfect sense....and sometime I laugh at those and sometimes I shake my head because they are so incredibly obvious. I still like them because logical things make me feel complete! That, and I can relate to many of them!

Here is a list of some of my personal favorites:

1. Dear teacher, I talk no matter where I am. Moving my seat will not help. (I was that child. Wait, I am still that child)
2. Texting someone to tell them you are outside their house instead of knocking. (Yes, I have done this)
3. I want a person who comes into my life by accident, but stays on purpose. (I've been lucky enough to have this.)
4. Brunette: "Look, it's a dead bird!" Blonde looks up into the sky: "Where? (I'm a redhead)
5. I don't care how many friends we have in common...if I don't know you, I'm not adding you! (unless you are a Zazzler)
6. BESTFRIENDS: They know how weird you are and they still choose to be seen with you in public. (I love mine)
7. If you need a drug test to get a job, you should need a drug test to get welfare!
8. Don't make a girl fall for you if you have no intention of catching her. (I caught mine. Or she caught me...not sure which)
9. Just because you can fit in a bikini does not mean you should wear one. (guilty as charged)
10. The happiest people don't have the best of everything, they just make the best of everything they have. (hooray, I'm happy)
11. If you are talking behind my back, you are in a good position to kiss my ass. (pucker up)
12. If you don't treat her right, don't be upset when someone else does. (which is why I do my best to treat her right)
13. Sometimes your knight in shining armour is just an idiot in tin foil.
14. How come Mario can smash through bricks, but dies when he touches a turtle!!??
15. I will carry 20 grocery bags so I don't have to make a second trip. (yes, I do this)
16. You are such a good cook, even the smoke alarm is cheering you on! (oh, to be able to say this never happened to me)
17. Teenager: "Mom I'm going out." Mom: "With friends?" Teenager: "No, Mom, with Pikachu!"
18. Your skinny jeans have no desire to be your stretchy jeans!
19. I wish I could Google anything. I'd Google "Where is my iPod" and it would say "Under the couch". (if only)
20. Any fool can paint a picture, but it takes a wise man to be able to sell it. (Zazzle anyone)

Some of them made you laugh, didn't they! I know; they made me laugh too, and for various reasons...again, some because I could relate to them and some because they were just funny to imagine. Now if only I had a whole selection of funny quotes on in my Zazzle store. Well, since I don't, you are welcome to peruse the funny quotes that do exist on Zazzle HERE!

All In A Name

I have a rather unique middle name. Especially for someone of my gender. And, I rather like my middle name as it matches my roots (Irish/Scot) and my enjoyment of being different than everyone else in some way. Even if it's a small way...I still get to be one in a million. Or, possibly more than that. Which is quite different from my first name wherein I am one of probably several billion.

Shaw. That's it. Nope, it's not my surname; it is my middle name. I actually went by my middle name for about two years as a teen, but only to a select group of friends. And one friend knew me by both Jessi and Shaw so she called me Shawsi, but she was the only one to ever call me that to this day. No matter how unique that one is, I don't want that nickname to make a comeback. Funny thing is I can't for the life of me recall her name now. Hmm. Now I feel just a twinge of guilt.

Anyway, I periodically check to see if my middle name has hit the charts yet and as of yet, it still has not. As a surname, sure; but not as a first name for either a girl or a boy...but especially not for a girl. As a matter of fact, several websites will tell you that Shaw has never once appeared on the list of top 1,000 names in the US.

Footloose. There has to be maaaaybe 25 people on the planet who haven't seen Footloose (purely judged by the six degrees of Kevin Bacon) and they all live in a remote village deep in the Amazon (for those of you who slept through Geography, this is the jungle not the dot com).

I'll bet you that I am the only person you know who would get this little bit of trivia correct (before the publishing of this article, anyway). The question: "What is the name of Ariel's father in Footloose?" The answer: "Shaw. Or rather, Reverend Shaw Moore if you want to get totally technical." The only character I've ever known who's first name was Shaw. Go ahead. Google it. Try to prove me wrong.

Hey, if you can, I'll be happy to hear it!

And if you are named Shaw, I'll be happy to hear that as well.

CONTEST!!!!!

I have designed an invitation to be the chosen invitation for the Zazzle holiday party that they will be having in January. The unfortunate thing is that Zazzle has decided that all their contests will now be held via a Facebook app. A lot of my friends do not want to download an app just to vote for me. Which I completely understand as I wouldn't want to download one just to vote for them on something either.

Luckily I'm in the top ten still...as the top ten get to be finalists - which will then be sent over to Zazzle for a panel of judges to view and decide on which one they like best based on the number of votes received, the design quality and the creativity. Basically, they just take the top ten and then it's a total toss up from there because it will all come down to what the panel of judges like best.

And I am a friend of theirs on facebook, but that doesn't mean I don't want to win the contest.

The winner of the contest will get two things:

1. 300 of the winning invitations will be ordered by Zazzle and used for their holiday party. Up to $100 in royalties will be paid out to the winner as a result of these 300 invitations.
2. A feature in the Zazzle Blog. This will be HUGE for whoever wins as it will get them noticed. And being noticed among thousands of other Zazzlers is not easy to do!

I could use the prize behind door number one but the prize behind door number two would outweigh the first one tremendously in my book!

I'm getting to that desperate point.

Getting Organized

Some things in my life I have been way too lackadaisical about lately. My main Zazzle store, JessicaInSeattle, for instance has needed a major facelift for about two years now! Okay, I agree, that can not reasonably be defined as "lately". But I have been meaning to get to it lately and I have been procrastinating worse than I ever have before!

Why I have procrastinated is the million dollar question. I haven't the slightest clue. I have, however received some fantastic motivation from my girlfriend and also from fellow Zazzlers. Yes, we call ourselves "Zazzlers". Geeky isn't it? And I kind of love it. It's just geeky and ridiculous enough that I really enjoy being referred to by the title.

Okay, that was a little bit off topic. I'm channeling my inner a.d.d. child today.

So, I did a little bit of organizational work on my store today and I think it's coming along...SLOWLY!!! Oh. My. God. Has there ever been a more tedious job! Yes, yes, I'm sure you can think of one. But we aren't here chit chatting about you now, are we?

I now have several categories on my page that are entirely (or mostly) empty and will require deletion when I am finished. And I have a whole hoard of new categories that are filling up quite nicely, if I do take a moment to toot my horn here and I believe I have full right to do that. So, there. It has been tooted!

And now, I take my deep breath, shrugging my shoulders with the incredible inhale and letting them fall back to natural with the overly dramatic exhale as I struggle with getting my brain to focus on what the hell it had planned for me to write next. But alas, I have lost it.

So, I shall, instead take this as a sign that I am most definitely in need of some herbal tea, melatonin, a hot bath and the last few pages of my current book.

Home With Sniffles

My daughter woke up at three a.m. the other morning reporting that her forehead hurt. Unfortunately, she also felt warm to the touch. Not a good sign! When she was still warm as we were getting her older brother ready for school, I took her temperature. Yep, she had a low grade fever. A call was made to her daycare to let them know that she would be spending the day with Mom.

We dropped big brother off at school and headed home where we snuggled and watched Miracle On 34th Street on streaming Netflix. Gotta love Netflix (and the new downloadable channel for it on our Wii)!

After the movie, she was feeling warmer again so I put her in the bath with her five rubber duckies and some bubbles. Did you ever hear that song about the five little ducks? You should check it out...it's pretty cute! While she was in the bath, we read several of Aesop's Fables. I still try to teach my kids about life's lessons even while they are sick with the sniffles playing with rubber ducks in a bubble bath!

We rinsed off the bubbles, dried her off and I fed her some chicken and mashed potatoes (her pick) while she was tucked into bed. I think all kids who stay home for the day should get to be fed lunch in bed. Makes not feeling good feel a little bit better.

As she took her nap a couple hours later, I got a chance to finally work on a new product available on Zazzle. Necklaces!!! They are so much fun to work on! In a matter of two days, I have now made over 50 necklaces between my two sites!

Anyway, back to Sniffles McSnuggly who I had to wake up from her nap in order to go pick up her brother from school in time.

She konked back out in the car on the way to the school and stayed asleep on my shoulder while I talked to my sons teachers and we visited his librarian. She got very heavy after a little bit!

We headed back home with Sniffles and her big brother. She's feeling a bit better now...especially after eating a chocolate a day from her advent calendar. I think the Harry Potter series may have it right...chocolate does have healing properties!

Breast Cancer Awareness Month!

October is breast cancer awareness month. Not sure why there is only one month to bring awareness to this devastating disease, but ranting is not what my post today is about.

Today, I write to let you know that you too can help fight to fund the cure for breast cancer. I do. Every year I make a donation to fund breast cancer research. So far I have raised over $500. No, it's not a lot, but I've been doing it for only 3 years, I'm a single mom and I was recently laid off from a job I had for 10 years so I'm thinking, hey, it's not too shabby!

This is a big fucking deal!

On March 23, 2010, I got an email with a link to watch a clip of Joe Biden saying something into Barack Obama's ear right before Obama was to speak about the Health Care Reform he had just signed into law.

What was it VP Biden said? "This is a big fucking deal!" Yep, the VP dropped the f-bomb.

So, what was my initial reaction? I opened my eyes real wide, dropped my jaw and said to myself "I have to put that on a shirt!"

I immediately went to my gallery on Zazzle and created this:

I have made more money from some of my other products on my Zazzle gallery, but none have been this successful this quickly.

My first sale was just minutes after creation. Within 24 hours, my product was number two when searching for "big fucking deal" in the search field on Zazzle and now, you can find it by searching Google.
