Snow In Seattle

This is Jessica In Seattle here, reporting on the snow in Seattle that was supposed to be between one and three inches but has instead turned into approximately seven inches. The kids are, of course, loving every minute of it...until their little fingers start to hurt. And the adults get overly confident and think they can drive in it even though they can't.

There have been some unusual reports for the Seattle area today. A city bus slid on some slush or ice or something slippery and ended up flipping over onto its side. No serious injuries from that, luckily. A large plane slid right off the end of the runway at the airport. No reported injuries from that. Too many fender benders to even track occurred starting early this morning. Several side roads were blocked by cars that couldn't quite make it and at least three semi trucks were reported to have jackknifed on at least three of the major roads.

One semi truck was reportedly jackknifed shortly before five o'clock this evening. A friend of mine and her son left to go pick up a family member right around five o'clock. It is now half past midnight and they are still at a complete stand still on Interstate 5 just north of where that truck jackknifed about eight hours ago. They are stuck in their car in traffic that has not moved even an inch for hours, have not had dinner and I really hope that neither of them has to pee!

I sent her a text and told her that I wished I had super powers so I could get them out of that mess. It is absolutely insane that all of those people are stuck in traffic for that long!

After hours of searching online for some explanation for the gridlock, I finally found this news report:

They tell us that the Interstate is gridlocked, that people have started running out of gas, abandoning their cars or turning their cars off and lying down in the seats to sleep. The things is, they don't say why it is gridlocked, only that it is! And apparently there are also over 200 city buses stuck in the Seattle area!

I am so grateful that I have a warm home to be in tonight and I hope that those people who don't, have found a way to keep warm enough. I can't imagine being caught out in this weather. I'm sure the hostels and shelters are full this evening.

Guess I'm not going to the appointment I had scheduled for tomorrow morning!

Until next time, this has been Jessica In Seattle!
May all your hearts be warm, even if your toes are not.

Yeth It Ith A Lithp

So, last night I was having conversation number 743, 692 with my three and a half year old daughter who, like me, never stops talking. I have noticed in the past that she has had some trouble pronouncing some of her words and have worked with her on pronunciation of a few of them. I have thought for several months now that sometimes her speech sounds a little bit "muddy".

Why it took me until last night to realize that my daughter is actually lisping, I have no idea. Maybe it was because we were talking about her older "thithter" and I was lying down while she was standing next to me and I could see her mouth working while she spoke. After about 10 minutes of work, she was able to say "sister" but only if she kept her teeth together for the entire word.

She has an uncannily extensive vocabulary for a three and a half year old. She can talk the socks off of just about anyone and most adults understand her perfectly well enough to carry on a rather extensive conversation. So I start to wonder...is this lisp something she will outgrow and I can just work with her on it, or is this lisp something that she would need a speech therapist to assist her with? Or...will it stay with her throughout her life?

I did a little bit of research and it has all told me so far that she may out grow it by the time she's four and a half. In the mean time, I suppose it won't hurt to keep trying to teach her how to put her teeth together when making "s" and "z" sounds.

And of course, I'm not about to let her think there is anything wrong with her lisp. In fact, in a three year old, it's kind of cute. But when she's ten and in the fifth grade, she could get teased relentlessly. So, I'll work with her and hope that she outgrows it before anyone gets a chance to tease her about it.

And onward to conversation number 743,693!

Caribbean Vacation

This will be short because I am still jet lagged and my legs still seem to believe that I am at sea, but I wanted to pop in a little post here about the Caribbean vacation we just had. We took an Olivia vacation as our first cruise and I regret to say that there were a few things about the vacation that were rather disappointing.
First of all, before we even left there were things promised by Olivia that didn't happen when they were supposed to. Such as a host hotel and a party the night before the cruise. The host hotel was finally announced just weeks before we left and the party ended up being arranged by people going on the cruise.
Secondly, the food on the cruise line Olivia chose for this one was absolutely terrible. Steph and I both lost weight while on the ship and we weren't the only ones. Olivia picked Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) and this particular ship was called the Sun. There were some things about the ship itself that were off too...the tv in the room looked like it was made at least 10 years ago if not longer and the hair dryer looked like it was installed in 1953.
Since this was our first cruise ever, we didn't really know what we were doing or what to expect. We asked around to friends who had cruised before and got some advice but none had ever been on the Sun before.
On the first island we stopped at, Steph and I mostly just walked around the beach front, swam in the ocean and I was too hot to eat anything on the island. We did adventure into a jewelry shop and make a purchase and we bought a few items for the kids and nieces as souvenirs for them. Ah shit, I just realized I didn't get anything for my niece. Well luckily she is only 2 so I don't think she even realized I was on vacation.
Anyway, on our second island, we took a tour of the island and that was quite fun. Unfortunately, the 3rd island we were supposed to stop at, did not happen due to windy weather. That really disappointed me because there was a particular conversation I wanted to have with Steph on that island, but we ended up having that conversation over a terribly expensive dinner that did not please the palate and actually upset my stomach.
At least I did get to have the conversation. I still wish it could have been how I planned it though. At least I got what I hoped for out of it. That is ultimately what counts.
Okay, I'm going back to bed.
